A quick and easy look at Cape Town's hot spots!

Tourists are discovering the treasures of Cape Town and Tourism Radio has found the X’s that mark the hotspots.

Tourism Radio is a device that is fitted into hire cars and plays information specific to their location using GPS technology. In a year-long review, conducted from January 2008 until January 2009, they tracked where and when self-drive tourists were travelling in the greater Western Cape Area through these devices.

Tourism Radio’s founder and Chief Operating Officer Mark Allewell said, “We pride ourselves on offering the best possible service we can to the tourists that hire our devices. We are also constantly developing that service. This is our way of finding out what needs to be improved and where, especially with the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup just around the corner!”

Overall, 54 areas were identified as ‘tourist hotspots,” such as Cape Town’s City Bowl. Other surprising results included the towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Worcester.

“As locals, we can forget the attraction that our City Bowl holds for visitors and tend to think that they would rather spend their time in the trendy area of Camps Bay for example.” said Allewell.

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and Table Mountain are just a couple of the popular attractions found in and around the City Bowl. With highlights such as these, it’s not surprising that Tourism Radio’s users spend 8.42% of their time there.


The Atlantic Seaboard wasn’t far behind and bagged three of the top five positions. According to Tourism Radio’s statistics, tourists spent a lot of their time in Sea Point (6.08%), Camps Bay (3.6%) and Hout Bay (2.35%).

CEO of Tourism Radio Jacques Teichmann says, “You would think that it was a lot of hard work putting these statistics together but actually, thanks to our simple and effective technology, it’s just a click of a button. We’ve now gained an insight into the independent traveller and we’ll be able to understand these people better and therefore are able to give them more of what they want and need.”
