The Cape Winelands have long been an alluring prospect for tourists. According to the February Statistics that Tourism Radio has gathered, it is evident that tourists are spending more of their time in the area than ever before.
In 2005 Tourism Radio was founded as a device that is fitted into hire cars and plays information specific to their location using GPS technology. Thanks to this technology, Tourism Radio has been able to compile data on where and when self-drive tourists are travelling. This information has proven invaluable when it comes to understanding what it is these tourists want and need on their travels.
Today, Tourism Radio released their February statistics and when compared to the same period last year, they discovered a rather astonishing surprise: an enormous increase in the time tourists are spending in the Cape Winelands.
Tourism Radio’s founder and Chief Operating Officer Mark Allewell said, “The Cape Winelands and Franschoek in particular gave us the most astonishing result when compared to previous years. In February 2008, Tourism Radio users were only spending 0.92% of their time in the Franschoek area. In February 2009, this figure shot up to 5.6%! That’s about as much time as our users are spending in Cape Town’s City Bowl! It seems that with the aid of our devices, visitors are really able to appreciate places like Franschoek and all it has to offer."
Other areas of the Cape Winelands to see an increase were Stellenbosch, which rose from 2.63% to 3.78%, and Paarl which saw an increase from 0.27% to 0.38%.
