Gary throws in the Player towel

The U.S. Masters wrapped up on Sunday with Angel Cabrera claiming the coveted green blazer but he certainly wasn't the only man under the spotlight at the high profile tournament.

Quite a fuss was made as Gary Player, our very own South African golfing legend, walked off the 18th green for what would be his last time. Player, who is now 73, had announced that the 2009 U.S. Masters - the 52nd one he has played in - would be his last.

As he loped off the last green, Player received a long lasting standing ovation with many of today's golfing stars joining in to salute one of the game's greatest legends.

Golf fans will of course know that calling Gary Player a legend is not an exaggeration. In his career, he has won nine majors - quite an impressive feat from a man who at the age of 20 was scoffed at for having "no feel for the game". In fact, his technique was thought to be so bad that he was advised to return to South Africa and try another career.

Thankfully, Player shrugged off the negative criticism and followed his dream. Today, he is an inspiration to many - even those who haven't a clue about golf and though he won't be returning to the U.S. Masters again, he'll definitely be remembered for a long time to come.
