So here goes...the top ten road trip list, brought to you by www.southafrica.net
1. The Stellenbosch Wine Route.
Between the historical town of Stellenbosch and Somerset West are peaceful country roads crammed with wine estates selling fantastic wines. There are also lots of fantastic restaurants that are worth stopping in for a bite.
2. The Garden Route.
One of the most popular self-drive routes in the country. The ocean road (N2) takes drivers past some of the country’s best-looking lagoons, mountain views, coastal forests and ocean vistas.
3. The Cape Peninsula.
Take in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, pass Noordhoek with its curving beach and Kommetjie, then on to Cape Point. Return via Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek after lunch in Kalk Bay.
4. Stellenbosch to Franschhoek.
It’s a seriously scenic drive thanks to a mountain pass and the colours of the Cape’s vineyards – go passed some of the country’s great wine estates and land up in Franscchoek, food mecca of the country.
5. Cape Town to Hermanus.
Takes only about 90 minutes from Cape Town, follows the Overberg coastline (R44, R43) past Betty’s Bay, offers plenty of gorgeous ocean views and delivers you to a delightful seaside town (known for its whale watching).
6. Route 62.
Head off along route 62 as it meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn as the scenery changes incorporating rugged mountains, scenic passes, and gorgeous vineyards and orchids
7. Cape Town to Worcester and Robertson.
The wine estates, abundant rose blooms and horse stud farms around Robertson are a must; drive back via Swellendam.
8. Cape Town to Paternoster.
Travel along the R27 to this West Coast fishing village – a favourite weekend getaway spot for Capetonians because the inlets, rocks and beaches are great to explore and the food in town is city quality.
9. Cape Town to Waenhuiskrans (aka Arniston).
Stop off at any of the coastal hamlets along the way (Gansbaai is famous for shark cage dives) and arrive at dusk for cocktails with a view in a functioning fishing village.
10. Cape Town to Tulbagh and Ceres.
The whole of Chursch street in Tulbagh has been declared a National Heritage Site thanks to its shapely Cape Dutch architecture and Ceres is known for its shapely rock formations.
