Do the Maths

In a grand departure from what is happening in South African schools of late, the English seem to be doing considerably better. A 14 year old home schooled pupil from Surrey has been offered a place at Cambridge University. That makes him the youngest student there for nearly 230 years. So I guess it's safe to call Arran Fernandez a child prodigy.

Its not the first time he's made the news though. This maths genius first made headlines in 2001 when he wrote the GCSE maths exam. Big deal? Uh...yes. The test is normally taken by 16 year olds, Arran took it when he was five. Forget Lego, bring on the trig.

So the next step for Arran is to pass his A-level physics exam and then poof! he's a varsity student. Drinking, partying, meeting girls...no, no wait - he's only fourteen. Arran has been quoted as saying that maths has been his favourite subject for as long as he can remember. He doesn't need a particularly long memory for this one though because well, he's still a kid.

He's literally a prodigy, and that's a pretty cool title to be called. Beats nerd and geek - typical to maths lovers of that age. He's an ambitious young man apparently with considerable academic potential.

Nintendo Arran? No thanks, he's going to solve the Rieman hypothesis - a theory about the patterns of prime numbers that has had the greatest mathematicians scratching their heads for about 150 years.

Go on Arran - do the maths. Stumble Delicious Technorati Twitter Facebook
