Things are getting really exciting in South Africa’s music scene as there are just 3 weeks left until the South African Music Awards. There are 56 categories for the awards and over 230 artists have been nominated. It’s only one category we’re interested in though and that’s the Newcomers category. There are so many up and coming artists in South Africa nominated for this award and every one of them seems deserving.
The first nominee we have is Andile Mseleku with her album Essence of Joy. Now, Andile is from Durban and is a jazz diva who is definitely a shining star.
Then there’s Jody Williams. The name might be familiar to you if you’re a fan of Idols – Jody was season 4’s winner. She has been nominated for her first full length album Just Gotta Be Me which actually made over ZAR3 million in less than a year. Jody is also up for the Best Pop Album in English.
Our third nominee is Babu, an interesting quartet has made waves with their jazz/Indian fusion music since they formed three years ago. In fact, they’re so great at what they do that they were asked to perform at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2008 before they had even launched their debut album, Up Roots – the album which they have been nominated for in the awards.
Heard the Voice of Angels? Well, they’re coming in as our fourth nominee. The Voice of Angels is a choir that is made up of 17 children between the ages of 11 and 14. These 17 kids were actually taken from the Tygerberg Children’s Choir, which has won many international choir competitions since its formation in 1972.
That leaves just one nominee left, and it’s a band that will leave you wanting more to rock out to. Zebra and Giraffe have already had three hit singles since their album Collected Memories was released last year. Just a couple of weeks ago the band performed alongside award winning international rock bands at the Coca Cola Zero Fest in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The nomination for the Newcomers award isn’t their only nomination either – they also have a shot at the Best Rock, Best Album Packaging and MTN Record of the Year awards.
So who will it be? Three weeks certainly seems a long time to wait to find out but good luck to all the nominees!
