Tomorrow, the 22nd of April will be the day of South Africa’s fourth general elections since becoming a democracy in 1994 and if you haven’t realized how cool it is to vote on your own, places like Wimpy are offering incentives to make your mark.
Wimpy franchises across the country will be giving away a free cup of coffee to anyone who comes in tomorrow and shows them their ink – that is, the ink that you get on your thumb when you vote. For these elections, it hasn’t just been Wimpy who are encouraging people to vote. There has been a mass movement amongst the population of South Africa to encourage voting and “having your say” or “being the voice of change” and it is certainly paying off as most people plan on putting in the effort tomorrow to make their voice heard.
While there is a widely held belief that Jacob Zuma, the ANC president, will be the next South African president, the campaign wars have been epic for these elections. The DA (Democratic Alliance) have been out in force with posters, rallies and, of course, trying to see Zuma’s corruption charges hold up in court. Then of course there’s COPE (Congress of the People) which is a party that was formed after the ANC split recently. COPE has gotten themselves a lot of support over the past few months with their aggressive campaigning through the media and it’ll certainly be interesting to see how that paid off when the numbers come in.
So get up early tomorrow and go and cast your vote. There’s no reason not to. It’s the ‘in thing’ to do and, you can score a cup of coffee for it to.
