The contractors behind the building of the Green Point Stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are confident that the stadium will be ready by it's delivery date of December 14 despite the threat of a very cold and wet winter.
While all those involved are of course making provisions for winter and do admit that their biggest challenge is winter downpours, they are working harder than ever to make sure any issues resulting because of winter can be avoided.
Personally, I think they're right on track. The 68 000 seater stadium is set to have a glass roof - the first parts of which were fitted on Thursday already. The grass for the pitch is being grown on a farm out in Stellenbosch and is looking great and the internal finishes, like the VIP suites, change rooms and bathrooms, are planned to be finished by July. (As a side note here, would it be possible to get a map for those change rooms? I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to see our boys changing)
Of course, it hasn't been sunshine and roses to get this far. The construction of the stadium has been met with many challenges since it was started almost two years ago and soon we'll be left with a construction that the entire city of Cape Town can be proud of.
