Numbers aren't everything
This weekend was filled with activity for the Johannesburg metro police who managed to arrest and impressive number of 16 motorists for excessive speeding. Maybe "excessive" isn't the right word for over 200 km/h though.
Senior Superintendent of the police department, Wayne Minnaar, said that one driver, a 35 year old man, was caught driving at 239 km/h (About 148 mph) just after midnight on Saturday in a Golf GTI.
The second impressive speedster, aged 27, clocked in at about 202 km/h (125.5 mph)...in a Renault. Now while it is impressive that he managed to attain speeds that high in a Renault, officers also discovered that the driver attempted to dodge the speed cameras. Once he had been arrested the police discovered his rear and front number plates in the boot.
All the drivers will be charged in the Midrand Magistrate's Court today with reckless and negligent driving.
I suppose the important thing to remember is...do I really need to say it? I suppose I do. Leave the excessive speeding to those on a race track. The rest of us have to share the road with you and I don't exactly want your thrill seeking to endanger my life (or my car).
