Pimp for President

It's a slow news day. Fortunately, there's always a myriad of political faux pars to fall back on when all talk of holidays and optimism and cheer fail you. Or me rather. So let's get straight into it. The President of South Africa has had a love child. That's so 70's don't you think? Anyway, he's recently married his fifth wife and his little button was born just a couple of weeks after the ceremony and it wasn't his wife's baby.

No biggie? The South African public have been 'apologised' to, opposition leaders have decided that its not enough. So what do we think? Is it or isn't it? Unfortunately Jacob Zuma - whom I respected because of his PR strategy, I have to admit is fast falling from my fragile favour. It is no wonder that HIV and Aids will bring this country to its knees. It is no wonder that we have children orphaned everyday because of the disease. It is no wonder that dangerous sexual conduct is so rife. What is this man thinking? And who are these women who keep sleeping with him?

First on trial for raping an HIV+ woman. But that didn't seem to stop him - no, no. Any chance to sleep with 'that there woman' and he's hard pressed for something better to do like run a country? Wow. It's embarrassing. South Africa can't expect to have two priorities. Or many for that matter.

We are either undergoing globalisation or we are under going an African 'renaissance.' You decide but it cannot be both. How can we evolve past antiquated and unsafe 'cultural' freedoms to establish a major role in the world? We have to choose. One or the other. Just like you can't have a democracy and support oppressive ideals, so you can't enter a phase of globalisation and still carry on like we're living in the bush.

I tell everyone this story but I might have to stop. Whenever I come back to SA from whatever trip I've been on - I always get butterflies. I'm always glad to be home. But not so much anymore. I used to think that we were lucky - it’s more and more clear to me that we all have our cross to bear, we're just at a different stage of the journey.

A chauvinist, a pig, a backward, unprincipled 'leader.' Sure he might be a nice guy but no one gives a shit - act like a President and not like a lead character in Pimps and Prostitutes for Parliament. Stumble Delicious Technorati Twitter Facebook
