Malema puppet under the hammer
A few days before South Africa's general elections on the 22nd of April, Nandos, a fast-food chain restaurant, aired a controversial advertisement. The advertisement featured a puppet which bore a resemblence to ANCYL (African National Congress Youth League) leader, Julius Malema. That puppet has now been placed on auction and the last official word was that the bidding had reached R85000.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about you can view the advertisement in question below, a humorous blend of popular political concepts and...fast-food.
The advert, while only hinting at who the puppet could be, draw vast amounts of attention 2 days before the South African elections took place, mainly because the ANCYL stepped forward and took offense at the depiction of their leader, Julius Malema. This wasn't the first time Julius has been in the news either. During his time in the ANCYL he has drawn much attention with various statements. The most popular statement the media cites is of course: "we are prepared to take up arms and kill for Zuma".
Matters were resolved between the fast-food giant and the ANCYL leader however and that leads us to the point of this story. The radio controlled puppet, which cost approximately R30 000 to create, was put up for auction to raise funds for charity. The auction was set to end at midnight on Wednesday, but at last reports, the bids had reached R85 000 and there was no clear winner.
Whoever the winner is though, that puppet will make one heck of a conversation piece.
